As one of its key corporate objectives, TransGrid aims to achieve a high standard of reliability of supply, whilst providing a safe environment for the public.
To achieve this, TransGrid determines the scope and frequency of transmission line inspections and maintenance, taking into account the surrounding environment.
Types of transmission line inspections include:
- Aerial inspection
- Climbing inspection
- Ground inspection
- Foundation inspection
- Underground inspection
Vegetation control and easement maintenance
The maintenance of safe clearances between conductors and vegetation is essential to eliminate the risk of lines causing bushfires, ensure public safety and maintain high levels of system reliability.
Also, easements and access tracks are required to be maintained in a condition which allows for both regular planned visits and emergency repairs.
TransGrid specifies the requirements for vegetation control within an easement, maintenance of access tracks and also places restrictions on the lighting of fires in the vicinity of lines. These requirements are in accordance with the Energy Services Corporations Act, Rural Fires Act and agreements with the relevant government authorities.
Aerial inspections
Occasionally helicopters can be seen flying in close proximity to our powerlines. These aerial patrols are a regular part of our maintenance program, allowing essential maintenance and inspection work to be conducted without 'switching off' sections of the high-voltage network.
Public announcements are usually made prior to the commencement of aerial inspections.
