TransGrid's Orange North Redevelopment Project is a $57 million investment to increase the security of power supply in the Central West region and Orange City. It is an important investment for the future of the region's electricity supply.
What is the project?
The Orange Substation is now over 50 years old and the substation site is too small to complete all the necessary upgrades. A new switching station will be built as part of a larger redevelopment project for the region’s power supply.
The project involves three parts:
- Building the new switching station on Leeds Parade
- Rearranging the transmission lines to connect the switching station to the existing network
- Upgrade works at the existing Orange Substation on William Street
The switching station and transmission line works are due for completion by late 2011 and the substation upgrade by mid 2013.
Where are we up to?
A Review of Environmental Factors (REF) has been prepared to assess the potential environmental impacts of the project. The review covers land use, noise, hours of work, traffic and access, flood levels, flora and fauna, cultural heritage, visual amenity and landscape, geology and soils, and electric and magnetic fields. Impacts such as noise, traffic, air and water quality are mostly limited to the construction phase. These would be managed through a Construction Environmental Management Plan.
The REF was on public display during December 2009 and January 2010. The submission period closed on 22 January 2010.
