TransGrid

The Western Sydney Supply Project is a $569 million investment to secure Sydney’s power supply for the future. This project is just one part of a five year, $2.4 billion plan by TransGrid to upgrade the electricity transmission network across New South Wales.

What is the project?

The Western Sydney Supply Project involves:

  • An upgrade of the existing above ground transmission line between the Sydney West Substation at Eastern Creek and the new Holroyd Substation at Greystanes
  • Construction of the new Holroyd Substation at Hyland Road, Greystanes
  • Construction of the new Rookwood Road Substation at Potts Hill
  • Construction of a new underground electricity cable between the two new substations.

Where are we up to?

The Western Sydney Supply Project is the most feasible and cost effective solution to overcome limitations in the transmission network in the Sydney area, and the project will proceed. Final planning, design and environmental approvals are currently underway.

Environmental approvals
Environmental assessment for the project must be carried out in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (the Act).

Environmental consultants will be engaged to undertake field studies and prepare a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for each part of the project as required under the Act.

TransGrid will display all the REF reports and provide an opportunity for the community to have a say on the project. Each REF will be on display for 21 days.

Update on the underground cable
TransGrid is proposing to install underground electricity cables, spanning approximately 14km. Subject to Sydney Water's agreement, a possible route has been identified along the Liverpool to Parramatta T-way between Hyland Road and Fairfield Road; Sydney Water’s pipeline corridor between Guildford and Regents Park; and a small section of roadways in Guildford.

Update on the transmission line upgrade
The existing transmission line will be upgraded to operate at a higher voltage and two new short sections of line will also be built to connect the two existing transmission lines to the new Holroyd Substation.

International Environmental Consultants have been engaged to undertake field studies and prepare an environmental assessment. Field studies on private land will be co-ordinated with affected land owners. We expect to display the environmental assessment in mid 2010.

Update on the Holroyd Substation
The substation will be built in the south western corner of Hyland Road Regional Park. Consultants Sinclair Knight Merz have been engaged to undertake field studies and prepare an environmental assessment.

An environmental assessment has been prepared to examine the potential environmental impacts of the project. The review covers land use, noise, hours of work, traffic and access, flood levels, flora and fauna, cultural heritage, visual amenity and landscape, geology and soils, and electric and magnetic fields. Impacts such as noise, traffic, air and water quality are mostly limited to the construction phase. These would be managed through a Construction Environmental Management Plan. The submission period closed on 2 July 2010.  Click here to view the full report.

Update on the Rookwood Road Substation
The substation will be built on Rookwood Road, within the Potts Hill Business Park. Consultants EMGA|Mitchell McLennan have been engaged to undertake field studies and prepare an environmental assessment.

The environmental assessment has been prepared to review the potential environmental impacts of the project. The submission period closed on 1 July 2010. Click here to view the full report.
