Explores the inspiring journey of Ethan, a Transgrid apprentice, who turned his passion for hands-on work into a rewarding career in the energy industry. The clean energy revolution is reshaping Australia’s energy landscape, and the leaders of tomorrow are stepping forward to help drive this transition. For Ethan, an Indigenous apprentice at Transgrid, this journey has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. His story exemplifies the transformative potential of Transgrid’s Apprenticeship Program and the opportunities it offers for personal and professional growth.
From Concreting to Circuits: Ethan’s Path to Apprenticeship
Ethan’s journey into the electrical trade began in an unexpected way. Before joining Transgrid, he worked as a concreter with his father. It was Rosco, a career advisor from the Clontarf Foundation, who encouraged Ethan to apply for a position at Transgrid. Initially hesitant, Ethan declined, feeling content with his current job and believing others might need the opportunity more. However, Rosco persisted, and Ethan eventually applied.
“Funny enough, I got a job interview and met Glen, Tim, and Broughton,” Ethan recalls. “On January 18, 2021, I got a call from Broughton offering me the job. I was over the moon, and that was almost four years ago.”
Overcoming Challenges: From TAFE Anxiety to Triumph
The transition into an electrical apprenticeship wasn’t without its hurdles. Ethan candidly shares his struggles with TAFE, especially in mathematics, a subject he had dropped in Year 10.
“For someone who didn’t understand maths much in school, stepping into a job that demanded it was scary,” Ethan admits. “I failed my first exam and the first six months of AC, which made me feel like I’d let myself and my colleagues down.”
However, with the encouragement of his peers and a strong support network of friends, family, and colleagues, Ethan pushed through. He sought additional tutoring and dedicated himself to studying.
“Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is perfect. You just have to put your best foot forward and go for it,” Ethan says. “Finishing TAFE and securing my place at Transgrid is one of the best feelings of my life.”
Why Apprenticeships Matter
Ethan’s story aligns with Transgrid’s commitment to empowering individuals to develop valuable skills and contribute meaningfully to Australia’s renewable energy transition. In 2024, Transgrid welcomed its largest intake yet, with over 50 apprentices and graduates joining the company across NSW and the ACT. These programs provide a unique blend of formal training and on-the-job learning, preparing participants for a diverse range of roles, from electrical substation technician to transmission lines technician.
Stephen McSweeney, Transgrid’s Executive General Manager of People, Culture, and Safety, highlights the importance of these programs. “It’s never been a more exciting time to work in Australia’s energy industry. These apprentices and graduates are the next generation of leaders who will support the country’s transition to a renewable energy future.”
Finding Fulfillment at Transgrid
For Ethan, the most fulfilling part of his job is the variety of tasks and the sense of camaraderie with his team.
“Whether it’s cutting metal or understanding circuit breakers and alarms, there’s always something new to learn,” he says. “Camping out with the crew feels like being part of one big family. We all have different but similar interests, which makes it a great experience.”

Advice for Aspiring Tradies
When asked what advice he’d give to other young men, especially those from Indigenous communities, Ethan’s message is clear:
“Definitely give it a go. Even if you don’t like it at first, it could grow on you. You’ll pick up valuable skills, and finishing your trade can open doors to many opportunities. Don’t be afraid to ask for help—the biggest challenge at the end of the day is yourself.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Ethan’s aspirations reflect his passion for growth and knowledge.
“I’d like to stay in substations for a while, achieve Grade 2 or Grade 3 status, and take on more complex roles,” he says. “I want to expand my understanding and eventually teach others, just as my colleagues have taught me.”
Ethan’s journey is a testament to the impact of Transgrid’s apprenticeship program. With a record intake of apprentices and graduates, we continue to pave the way for a more inclusive and skilled workforce. These initiatives are not just about career development; they’re about creating leaders who will play a pivotal role in Australia’s clean energy future.
