How long have you been with Transgrid?
I started as a temp in 1993 and became a full-time employee in 1995. Unofficially, I’ve been with Transgrid for 32 years, but officially, I will be celebrating 30 years in April.
What’s your story?
I began my journey as a temp at reception in 1993 before being employed as an admin officer in 1995. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working across various departments, each providing me with new skills and perspectives.
In the Mains and Environment team, I had the exciting opportunity to go out in the field, inspecting high-voltage works and even flying in a helicopter to check transmission lines. Later, I transitioned into System Operations, where I helped convert operating manuals from paper to digital—quite a shift from when one person would manually enter the entire team’s time and attendance!
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career was serving as an Injury Management Consultant, supporting injured employees in their safe return to work. After that, I became a Personal Assistant to the System Operations Manager before stepping away to raise my three beautiful children. Upon returning, I resumed my role in administration before moving into IT in 2019 as the CIO’s assistant.
Looking back on your first day, what stands out most about starting your career here?
I have been fortunate to experience the stability and growth that came with working for Pacific Power, Pacific Grid, ETA, and now Transgrid. The organisation has consistently provided opportunities for learning and professional development, which has made a lasting impact on my career.
What was it like working in the energy industry as a woman all those years ago?
When I first started, I was one of only eight women among approximately 200 male staff members—all the women were in administrative roles. It was a very different environment compared to today, where workplace diversity and inclusion are actively championed.
What are some of the most memorable moments or achievements that stand out during your career?
I’ve had the privilege of working in different sections, learning about various aspects of the business, and engaging directly with the public through information evenings. My time as an Injury Management Consultant was particularly meaningful—acting as a bridge between workers’ compensation and employees to create return-to-work plans was challenging but immensely rewarding.
I’ve also loved being part of Transgrid’s cultural initiatives, such as the Diwali and Eid festival celebrations, which have enriched our workplace with diversity and connection. One of my favourite fun memories was participating in Transgrid’s annual Safety Day competitions—I was part of the fire team and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in the energy industry or at Transgrid?
Take every opportunity that Transgrid offers, and absorb as much knowledge as you can. It’s a great company to work for, with safety as the number one priority, and they will support you however they can.
In your opinion, what is the key to building a long and fulfilling career?
Happiness in the workplace is essential, along with having a great leader who supports and values you. Working to the best of your abilities and continuously growing in your role also contribute to a fulfilling career.

What has kept you motivated after so many years?
Transgrid has always supported me, both in good times and difficult moments. When you know that your organisation has your back, staying motivated comes naturally. Working with great colleagues who are all committed to Transgrid’s success also makes a huge difference.
How have your colleagues and the workplace culture at Transgrid contributed to your experience?
Over the past 30 years, I have been fortunate to work with wonderful colleagues. Workplace culture has evolved through ups and downs, but having a leader who fosters morale, understanding, and employee well-being makes all the difference.
What excites you most about the future of the energy industry and Transgrid’s role in it?
I am excited about Transgrid’s pivotal role in transitioning to a clean energy future. The energy industry is evolving rapidly, and I look forward to seeing how we continue to innovate and lead the way.
