Network inspections and maintenance

Transgrid undertakes ground and aerial inspections to identify safety risks to the network and actions any necessary maintenance to keep the network safe and reliable.

We work to communicate effectively with landowners to inform them of upcoming works and look to minimise impacts to property owners.

Some of the ways we keep the network safe and reliable include carrying out:

  • climbing inspections to assess the condition of lines and towers
  • annual aerial vegetation surveys to identify trees and shrubs growing too close to lines
  • vegetation management to maintain safety clearances
  • thermographic surveys using a helicopter to assess the condition of lines
  • inspections of lines and towers using drones
  • routine inspections of lines, structures and easements
  • inspections of wooden poles to assess their condition and replacing old poles as needed
  • refurbishment works where elements of lines and towers are replaced and easements and easement access is managed.

Helicopter Patrols

Transgrid has launched its 2025 bushfire prevention program, which includes helicopter inspections and 3D laser scanning.

Between May and September 2025, specialist helicopter crews will inspect transmission lines across the state, including the regions below.

Scheduled flights are shown in aqua blue below and drone inspections are shown in yellow. You can zoom in and click on each line to find out the date we will be flying that line.

You can also type your address in the search bar of the map to find out if a flight is planned near your property.

Further information on inspections in your area can be found below.

*Schedules can be impacted by many variables including weather and may change.

Drone inspections

As part of our routine inspection of our assets, we will be using drones to inspect transmission lines and structures in the following areas.

Works will involve:

  • flying a drone around transmission towers
  • increased noise levels while drones are flying

Flying uncrewed aerial vehicles

Transgrid is committed to ensuring the safety of the public and employees around its infrastructure, including substations, transmission lines, and telecommunication sites. With the rise in popularity of drones, kites, and model aircraft, the risk of interaction with Transgrid’s assets increases, potentially causing damage and safety hazards.

To reduce these risks, Transgrid provides the following information:

·No flying of drones, kites, or model aircraft near or over Transgrid easements, transmission lines, substations, or telecommunications sites.

·Transmission line easements may extend up to 80m, with specific flying restrictions around high-voltage areas.

·All drone operations must follow Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations and privacy laws regarding recording or transmitting footage.
