QNI project Dumaresq Substation civil works near completion

The substation near Bonshaw, just south of the Queensland border, is one of the substations upgraded as part of the Interconnector project. When complete, QNI will provide grid stability and reliable, lower-cost energy to consumers in NSW and Queensland.

TransGrid Executive Manager Delivery Craig Stallan said: “We have finished key elements of the QNI upgrade, including gantry construction at our Dumaresq and Tamworth substations and the replacement and upgrade of towers.”

Part of the new technology, and a reason for much of the civil works, is the installation of Static VAr Compensator (SVC) units, proven technology that will dynamically control reactive power on the power grid. Specialists from Siemens Energy, suppliers of this innovative technology, will commence commissioning the new SVC units from early October.

The Dumaresq substation footprint was enlarged for the interconnector upgrade, to accommodate the SVC units, new capacitor banks, SVC transformers and associated 330kV switch bays.

QNI upgrade work at Tamworth, Armidale and Dumaresq has employed up to 280 people since the project began in May 2020. The project is due for completion in late 2021.
