Regional showcase on funding opportunities for community groups

03 September 2024

Community groups across the Riverina will learn about invaluable funding opportunities and how to put their best foot forward when applying for grants at the first event of its kind to be held at the Transgrid Discovery Hub in Wagga Wagga.

Not-for-profit organisations including charities, sporting clubs, welfare services, bushfire brigades, neighbourhood centres, Aboriginal land councils, schools, environmental and arts groups are invited to the Community Grants Day on 11 September to learn about available funding opportunities and how to optimise.

Transgrid will host industry and regional stakeholders at the event, including Charles Sturt University, Essential Energy, Riverina Water and Wagga Wagga City Council to showcase available grant programs and meet volunteers and representatives from community organisations.

Executive General Manager of Corporate & Stakeholder Affairs Maryanne Graham said: “Not-for-profit groups across the Riverina provide invaluable services, facilities, activities and events that provide invaluable contributions to their local communities, and we’re delighted to be able to support their important work.

“Transgrid is delivering the critical infrastructure and priority projects identified by the Commonwealth and NSW governments to enable Australia’s clean energy transition.

“Communities across the Riverina are at the heart of the renewable energy transformation and we are committed to maximising the positive social and economic benefits across the region.

“Not-for-profit groups across the Riverina will be welcomed to our Discovery Hub to find out more about Transgrid’s Community Partnerships Program as well as other funding opportunities and organisations offering support and learn how to increase their chances of securing grants by putting forward the best possible application.”

Last year alone, Transgrid provided grants to 116 not-for-profit organisations including the Wagga Mardi Gras, Cycling Without Age Wagga chapter, Carevan Wagga, Kooringal High School, and Lake Albert Bush Fire Brigade.

Wagga Wagga Combined Hockey Association Facilities Manager Ken Larkin welcomed the Community Grants Day to help improve the organisation’s knowledge and chances of securing much-needed funding for facilities upgrades.

The association, which represents about 1,200 players, is planning to install entertainment facilities at Jubilee Park including a BBQ and bar.

“The challenge for us is that hockey is often seen as a Tier 2 sport and Tier 1 sports such as AFL, soccer and rugby seem to get the first point of call,” Mr Larkin said.

“Post-COVID, everyone is looking for a lot of financial support and we’ve got a lot of competition for what grants are on offer.

“I am looking forward to attending the Community Grants Day to learn more about the funding on offer from non-government organisations such as Transgrid and how best to frame my application to meet their grant program objectives.”

The Community Grants Day will be held on 11 September at the Transgrid Discovery Hub, 27 Kincaid Street, Wagga Wagga, with two sessions from 3-5pm and 6-8pm.

The event will drive awareness of funding opportunities with a range of organisations and provide practical advice to help community groups align projects with grant program objectives and provide the right information in their applications.

The event is free of charge for the community and will be filled on a first-served basis. The workshop will also be available online for those who cannot attend in person.
