Transgrid has partnered with drone technology provider Infravision to develop a safer methodology for stringing the 992 transmission line in Burrinjuck Gorge, near Yass. This follows a recent Transgrid decision to explore a safer alternative to using helicopters for works taking place in close proximity to power lines.

Transgrid and Infravision innovate using drones to safely complete stringing works

Drone stringing the 992 line was broken into two sections. The first section involved stringing rope between two structures over steep, rocky inaccessible terrain. The second more challenging section involved stringing an 800m span across the Burrinjuck gorge with a 200m elevation between Burrinjuck substation and another structure.
Drones were considered the most suitable option for stringing taking into account safety, cost and environmental factors. Transgrid selected Infravision based on their approach to problem solving and safety, their engineering experience and their aviation background.
