Pre-apprenticeship Program

Young regional women gain the opportunity to train for jobs in clean energy transition

06 January 2025

Young women in Wagga Wagga and Yass are being encouraged to take part in Transgrid’s 2025 Pre-Apprenticeship Program to inspire and prepare them for a rewarding career in the energy sector.

The Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women offers participants hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and a comprehensive introduction to the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in energy.

The five-week program, starting on 3 March 2025, will equip participants with valuable insights into various aspects of the industry, from electrical engineering to project management, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.

Transgrid’s Executive General Manager of People & Culture Stephen McSweeney said: “We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within our workforce. Transgrid is proud to provide young women in regional NSW with the opportunity to join Australia’s largest transmission business and help deliver the clean energy transition.

“The Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women provides hands-on experience with real field crews and highly interactive nationally recognised training, giving participants an opportunity to decide if a career in the energy industry is right for them.”

Upon completion of the program, a select number of participants will get the opportunity to continue their training and development in Transgrid’s Apprenticeship Program, which begins later this year.

Transgrid Apprentice Substation Technician Janika Walsh completed the first Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women in 2022 before successfully transitioning to the Apprentice Program last year.

“I applied for the pre-apprentice program because I wanted to leave school early and wasn’t sure if the electrical trade was for me. So, for me, it was a bit of a trial to see if it would be something I’d enjoy doing for a living,” Janika said.

“Working in the electrical industry, especially Transgrid, provides you with so many opportunities. The electrical industry is always growing and changing and there’s so many opportunities within it.

“My advice to girls who are thinking of doing the pre-apprentice program is that you should give it a shot, it’s a perfect way for you to get your foot in the door and get a feel for what kind of work is involved here at Transgrid.”

Applications will close on 19 January 2025. For more information, click below:
