Major component delivered with Powering Sydney's Future on track to secure Sydney's future energy needs

“Despite the challenges of COVID-19 and completing construction works through some of Australia’s most densely populated areas we remain on track for project completion on schedule,” TransGrid Executive Manager of Works Delivery, Craig Stallan said.

“Our teams have worked hard, with over 19.6 kilometres of conduit pipe laid in trenches, and we have so far installed 85 per cent of the underground cable in those pipes.”

“We’d like to thank residents and business owners for their patience as we progress our work and we will continue to focus on minimising the impact of the project on their communities,” Mr Stallan said.

The installation of the conduit system which is carrying the new underground power cables through West and South Western Sydney, recently included six nights of excavation work to cross the Princes Highway at St Peters.

Construction on Powering Sydney’s Future commenced in August 2020, with two thirds of the cable jointing work now completed.

“The Powering Sydney’s Future has been designed with a built-in capacity to accommodate our city’s future electricity needs,” Mr Stallan said.

The installation of the 20-kilometre underground cable from Potts Hill to Alexandria will help to ensure minimal community and environmental impacts in the future. Cables have been installed mostly along roads and the construction of cable bridges and underground crossings enable the cable to cross rail corridors, main roads and rivers.

“Transgrid will continue to work closely with the NSW Government, local councils, residents and local businesses to minimise the impacts of this major infrastructure work,” Mr Stallan said.
