Tamworth Substation Rebuild Project involves building a new substation in Tamworth on Goonoo Goonoo Road, to replace the existing TransGrid substation that has operated for that past 53 years.
The Tamworth substation was established in 1961 and its equipment is now approaching the end of its serviceable life.
This project is a major investment into the reliability of current and future supply for the Tamworth Region.
The new substation will be built adjacent to the existing substation on Goonoo Goonoo Road and has been designed to look similar to the existing substation that is operated by TransGrid and supplies electricity to the local distributor Essential Energy.

substation and its equipment are now approaching the end of their
serviceable lives and are in need of replacement. The rebuilt substation
will look similar to the existing substation.
The Goonoo Goonoo Road substation
receives power supply from the larger substation on Burgmanns Lane and
then distributes it through to the Essential Energy power lines into
Tamworth and the surrounding area.
The Tamworth substation site is located
in the Tamworth local government area (LGA) on the eastern side of
Goonoo Goonoo Road, at the southern end of the Tamworth Township.
The new Tamworth substation will be built on land that is directly adjacent to the existing substation, on the south side.
Once the new substation has been
constructed and all lines have been reconnected, TransGrid will demolish
the existing substation and rehabilitate the area.
The new substation footprint area is set
back from Goonoo Goonnoo Road and will be a similar size to that of the
existing substation. The new substation will be approximately 137
metres long by 82 metres wide.
2 x 132/66 kV 120 MVA transformers, bunds and associated switchbays1 x 66 kV busbar 2 x 132 kV line switchbays9 x 66 kV line switchbaysControl, protection and metering panels and cabling for all switchgear.
Construction began in mid 2014 with the
substation construction, demolition and remediation works anticipated to
be completed by early 2017.
As part of a separate project, TransGrid
is relocating its Tamworth depot to a new building that will be located
next to the new substation. Construction has started on the new
TransGrid depot and we expect it to be completed by the end of the year.
